RSL Welfare Gains by $7050 from Poppy Sales

21 Nov 09

Torquay RSL Sub-branch raised $7050 towards welfare work selling Remembrance Day poppies this year.

Once again the money raised shows the generosity of the community towards its returned service men and women,” said Torquay RSL President Joe Diffen.

“The people of Torquay dug deep in their support of the Poppy Appeal despite tough economic conditions,” he said.

“All of the $7050 will be dedicated to welfare work,” Mr Diffen promised.

From the $7050 raised, $5287.50 will go to RSL Victorian Branch for overall welfare work, and the remaining $1762.50 dollars will be retained by Torquay RSL for local welfare purposes.

“There is a growing need to support more of our ex-service men and women and to also support war widows who have need for help,” Mr Diffen said.

“Our welfare money comes mainly from the sale of poppies in November and badges in April for ANZAC Day.”

Mr Diffen thanked all who had helped sell poppies.

“Some local traders displayed poppies on their counters, and their support helped keep Torquay’s poppy sales at a high level,” he said.

Mr Diffen also thanked local Appeal Organiser RSL Member Alan Duncan and his volunteer poppy sellers for their efforts.

“Alan did a great job organising sellers for every day leading up to Remembrance Day and replenishing sales points to make sure sellers did not run out of poppies,” he said.

Mr Diffen said the efforts of the sellers were greatly appreciated.

“None complained at the long hours they staffed selling points and not one failed to turn up for their rostered times unless through illness.  They are a great bunch of people.”

“We are deeply grateful to them.”
